Today, we’re going to be taking a look at some fantastic color changing chemistry, using acids and bases! We featured this experiment in the studios of Channel 12 on Arizona Midday, click here to watch it all in action! Acids and bases are all around us, all the time. We can find acids in our DNA (in amino acids!), hydrochloric acid (in our stomach!), or, more commonly, in household items like vinegar and fruit. We can also find bases in baking ingredients (baking soda and powder!), household cleaners, and soap! Here is a list of common acids and bases, as well as what they’re usedRead More →

Recently, my husband signed me up for a monthly snack box subscription from Japan. Every box contained strange and wonderful delights from shrimp flavored snack chips to cotton candy with pop rocks! One of the most interesting snacks was this Create-Your-Own dolphin candy, which came with ocean character molds, a scenic ocean background, and all of the ingredients and tools we would need to put it together! Essentially, we were given chemistry in a box, and our result would be candy!Read More →

Halloween is my favorite time of year and it’s a great time for science! From sticky slime to shrunken heads, it’s a fantastic time to get messy and experiment with the world around you! One of our favorite science experiments is the Naked Egg experiment. This is one of the first chemistry experiments we ever did, and we love it! The result can be a bit messy, but it’s a lot of fun! When I had my niece over for Fall break, we tried it again. Only this time, we gave it a bit of a Halloween twist…Read More →

Halloween is the month for all things creepy and it’s a great time for playing with science! There are a lot of great science projects that can carry a Halloween theme, ranging from glow in the dark potions (that you can drink!) to dancing gummy worms. Halloween is a great time to bring out the fun in chemistry, and teach some really interesting concepts at the same time! I wanted to kick off our month of Halloween chemistry with a spooky take on an old idea. The experiment we conducted involved the science of decomposition and preventing the biological processes that cause it. We followed the simpleRead More →
