Earth’s climate is rapidly changing, and the impacts can be seen all around the world, with droughts, severe storms, coastal erosion, bleaching coral reefs, and so much more. We see these effects, and our children do too! They see their favorite animals disappearing due to a loss of habitat or changing migration patterns. They see their lands changing as coastal erosion increases. They see beautiful coral reefs bleaching due to rising acidity and temperatures within the oceans. It can be easy to feel overcome by the sheer weight of it all, and feel helpless as to what we can do to help. But even withRead More →

Now that Easter is over, what are we going to do with all of these eggs?! Easter lends itself to a lot of wonderful traditions with our families. First, we spend time coming up with new and unusual ways of dyeing them, like these silk tie dyed eggs we make every year! But once we’re done with the dyeing, the painting, the Easter Egg hunting, and the festivities… what’s left? We’ve got all these eggs lying around, surely we can put them to some use? We absolutely can! In this post, we’ll explore physics, engineering, and chemistry with Floating Egg Experiment, Dissolving Eggs, An EggRead More →

Recently, my husband signed me up for a monthly snack box subscription from Japan. Every box contained strange and wonderful delights from shrimp flavored snack chips to cotton candy with pop rocks! One of the most interesting snacks was this Create-Your-Own dolphin candy, which came with ocean character molds, a scenic ocean background, and all of the ingredients and tools we would need to put it together! Essentially, we were given chemistry in a box, and our result would be candy!Read More →

It’s an anatomy cake of SCIENCE!!!! Today I’ll share how we made our digestive system anatomy cake, took a blind taste challenge, and modeled the process of the digestive system! You can find the projects listed throughout this blog post (with a cake finale!), and links and resources at the end. But first, let’s take a look at how the digestive system works… The digestive system plays an incredibly important role in the proper function of the human body. All of the functions of our organs, tissues, and cells, rely on the nutrients gained from digested food. Every animal on Earth has some way toRead More →

I got new lab equipment! To celebrate, my daughter and I decided to have a chemistry week for our “Super Awesome Summer Camp of Science”. My daughter and niece would make slime, lava lamps, casein plastic, and diet coke geysers! We would celebrate the fun of chemistry while cooking up some chemical reactions! Before we could get concocting, however, we needed to go over some basics. We started with the atom.Read More →

A couple of weeks ago, Kat and I began our big geology project. We learned a lot about the geological history of Arizona and even took our lessons to the field! While examining the outcrops around us, we talked a lot about the layers of the Earth and plate tectonics. We talked about how layers of the crust may have been thrust upwards as plates moved into each other (uplift) and how some layers would sink under others as they moved lower to the mantle (subduction). However, as I was explaining these concepts to my daughter, I realized that she would have a much easierRead More →
